Disclaimer: post contains words in Nigerian pidgin( broken English)

The old but ever-current saying ” be careful what you wish for, ’cause you might get it ” might be one of the causes of this unpleasant situation in Nigeria.

In Nigeria, the typical manner of speech can be classified as a unique comedic rant yet deliberately predictive. This manner of speech usually consists of funny comments and curse words, spiced-up with pessimistic predictions, based on the past trends of the economy and government display.

Indeed I am in no position to blame anyone but think about it.
I made a funny jot from my small corner a few months back. I complained bitterly in writing about the increase in the price of our precious sardines and the hike in gas price. Then, I dropped a minor vocal complaint to express my dissatisfaction in words. I said, “who knows; maybe next it would be fuel scarcity” gbam!

Just like that, in February/March, the petrol Olympics began! See people waking up by 3 am to join cue for fuel. Traffic became worse. Buses became scarce. We, the commuters, paid the price. The bus stop started looking like crusade ground. Oh! And the exorbitant tee fares rose like Garri ijebu! No sign of a reduction is in view even as things have calmed down a bit. ( would it ever reduce?)

The minor complaint I made didn’t even feel intense. It was just a means to relieve the mental stress. However, imagine the thousands of people in Nigeria just dropping tear gas with their mouths daily to express themselves in the suffering and smiling situation!
Only for those words to wait for us in the future.

“It would not be well with this gov people oh, in fact, na God go____(fill in the gap)”

“Na so Asuu go____( fill in the gap)”
” just now, they would say dollar to Naira is…( let me not say anything).”

(So many things dey wen I no fit mention, but don’t lie, you know those things).

I am by no means saying that only our words would help us! No! But while we take baby steps as individuals to help ourselves and improve our personal or family economy, let’s also try to speak life into our country since life and death na mouth en dey!.

After all, since everyone has been saying Folake for the night, many Folake’s have been for the night. ( ps: I am not fighting anybody oh 😆 lol)

So my dearest Nigerians, try to dey speak well!

That Small Jot.
